Getting around Cancun is easier than most people expect. Whether you stay in the Hotel Zone or Downtown, you have several options depending on your budget and travel style.
In this guide, you will learn how taxis work, how to use the local buses, when it makes sense to rent a car and what to avoid.
Taxi in Cancun

axis are everywhere in Cancun and are one of the fastest ways to get around, but there is one important thing to know.
Always agree on the price before you get in.
Taxis in Cancun do not use meters. Prices are based on zones and distance, but there is no official list available to tourists, so drivers may quote different prices.
Short rides in Downtown Cancun are usually cheap, often between $2 and $5. In the Hotel Zone, prices are higher and a short ride can cost around $8 to $15 depending on distance.
A ride between Downtown and the Hotel Zone usually costs between $10 and $20.
Airport taxis are a different story. You cannot take a regular city taxi from the airport. Only authorized airport transportation is allowed, and prices are usually between $40 and $60 depending on your hotel.
For longer trips like Chichen Itza or Tulum, taxis are not a good option. You will pay a lot more compared to tours or rental cars.
Renting a Car in Cancun
If you plan to explore places like Tulum, cenotes or Mayan ruins, renting a car gives you the most freedom.
Driving in Cancun is easy. Roads are in good condition and parking is available in most areas, especially malls and tourist spots.
To rent a car you need:
- A valid driver’s license
- A passport
- A credit card
Prices vary a lot depending on where and how you book.
At the airport, a compact car can cost between $50 and $80 per day. If you book online in advance, you can often find deals closer to $30 – $50 per day.
Insurance is the most important part. Basic prices often look cheap, but full coverage can increase the total cost significantly. It is still recommended to take full insurance to avoid problems.
Gas is relatively affordable and there are plenty of stations. Toll roads are optional but faster, especially if you plan to drive long distances like Cancun to Merida.

Cancun Bus System (R1 & R2)
The local bus system is the cheapest and most practical way to move around Cancun, especially in the Hotel Zone.
Buses run 24 hours a day and pass very frequently during daytime.
The two main routes you need to know are:
- R1 – connects the Hotel Zone with Downtown Cancun and the bus station
- R2 – connects the Hotel Zone with local markets and residential areas
The fare is very cheap, usually around 10–12 pesos (about $0.60 USD), paid directly to the driver in cash.
Buses are easy to use. You just wait on the side of the road and signal the driver with your hand. They do not always stop unless you wave.
Inside the bus, press the stop button before your destination and exit through the back door.
Some buses have air conditioning, but not all. White buses are usually more comfortable than older ones.
For most tourists, buses are the best balance between price and convenience.

The city buses can get you to everything on Kukulkan Boulevard: malls, nightclubs, and most of it’s hotels and restaurants. Bus stops are in front of most of the main hotels and shopping centers. To use the bus, simply go out to the street and look for a bus stop. Buses do not stop at each bus stop. You will have to flag them down. Just throw your arm in the air as if you are hailing a taxi in New York City and the bus will pull over.

When the bus stops, go to the front door and board the bus. If you aren’t sure that the bus is going to your destination, ask the driver as you board. Keep it simple though because your driver may not speak much English. Just say short things like “Cancun Palace?” and you’ll be alright. If the driver nods yes, then get on the bus and pay your fare.
Even if you tell the driver where you are going when you board the bus, don’t expect him to remember your stop. Be on the lookout for your stop, during your trip. To stop the bus, press one of the buzzers found throughout the bus and exit on the back door.
There are no set bus schedules but, during the day, buses will pass by every few minutes. R-1 buses run all night, but there are not many on the road, after midnight.
Colectivo (Shared Vans)

Colectivos are small shared vans that run between cities like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
They are very popular among locals and budget travelers.
Typical prices:
- Cancun to Playa del Carmen: around 40 – 50 pesos
- Playa del Carmen to Tulum: around 25 – 40 pesos
They run frequently during the day and leave when they are full.
In Cancun, you can find colectivos near main roads in Downtown, especially along Avenida Tulum.
Important: colectivos do not go to the airport. For airport transfers you need private transport or shuttle services.
Biking and Scooters
n the Hotel Zone, there is a long bike path that runs almost the entire length of the area. This makes biking a great option for short distances.
Some hotels offer bicycles for free or for rent. You can also rent scooters or golf carts in certain areas.
Scooter rentals usually start around $25 per day. Always check the condition of the vehicle and understand the rental terms before leaving.
This option works best for relaxed exploration, not for long distances.
What is the Best Way to Get Around Cancun?
It depends on your travel style: if you stay in the Hotel Zone and plan to visit beaches, restaurants and nightlife, the bus is the easiest and cheapest option.
If you want comfort and speed, taxis are convenient but more expensive.
If you plan to explore the region, including cenotes, Tulum or hidden beaches, renting a car is the best choice.
For longer trips between cities, colectivos are a great budget option.
Final Tips
Transportation in Cancun is simple once you understand how it works.
Use buses for daily movement, avoid taxi surprises by agreeing on prices in advance and only rent a car if you really plan to explore outside the city.
A mix of these options usually gives you the best experience.
