 Genuine local food.
Nothing fancy but worth a try! We opted for fish tacos followed by ceviche and a beer. Ceviche was cooked as apposed to marinated in citrus juice but nice all the same. For the price and setting you can't go wrong!

If you want local charm and food, then....
Go to this restaurant. Not so hard to find. Right next to 19.5. Anyway. we were able to walk there from our resort and found it without a hitch as there were many cars parked there. A good sign. Food, service, and ambiance were excellent as long as you want an authentic experience. Mostly filled with Mexicans as you would expect. Another good sign. Couple of tips,,,great view of the sunset and open til 7pm.

 Excellent cheap food
Purposefully hidden from tourists..Delicious fish tacos for 15 pesos, ceviche, fried fish, etc. We were the only non-local people eating there, a good sign!

 Hidden gem!
Friends we made in Mexico told us about this spot.. they asked us to meet for lunch - did not know what to expect... but WOW!!! Loved this little spot, nothing fancy, glad I wore flip flops! Best ceviche I've tasted ever, fried fish tacos, and garlic shrimp. You won't regret coming here! Will certainly be back when we go back to Cancun. Don't hesitate, just GO!

 Amazing local cuisine
The owners of the Airbnb we are renting suggested this place, and it was the best suggestion! Their fish tacos are delicious (15 pesos-cheap and delicious) and their fish filet with mojo and garlic sauce is also outstanding! It is a lemon base with the perfect amount of garlic. They're open from 12-7 daily. It's off the beaten path a little bit, but they were the best tacos we had. Bring pesos and an empty stomach. We ordered like 8 tacos amongst the two of us on the first day we came, and 4 days later went back for more tacos and the fish filet.

 Lunch at authentic restaurant
Although a little hard to find, totally worth the effort. (Between 19-19.5 km) Open air kitchen serving fish tacos, ceviche, fresh food, grilled bananas, etc. We were the only gringos there that day which is ok for us. They spoke enough English to understand our order. The mixed ceviche was plenty for two of us to eat and some of the best ceviche I have had in awhile.

 Hidden Gem
This place is very hidden and judging by what your eyes see, you may not want to eat there if you are a typical westerner. However, this reminded me of some of the restaurants in Thailand so I gave it a chance. The food was some of the tastiest food I ate in Cancun and not so expensive. It is an open kitchen type of place, it is also a make shift kitchen with alot of character and characters. There is an older gentleman cleaning the fresh fish on the side and a grandma cooking food for you. It is relatively quick compared to other restaurants. The fish taquitos are good, so are the fried shrimp and the garlic and fried fish, my husband ordered a shrimp cocktail and said it was the best he has ever had. the servers were all attentive and nce.

 Best place for pescadillas
Visited this place with my boyfriend for a late lunch. It is probably the cheapest place in the hotel zone, frequented by locals for the delicious fish dishes. It has the best pescadillas for miles and the micheladas are also great! Will be back for more!

The best ceviche we tried in Cancun!
At first I got a bit scared when I saw the place... But the food was simply amazing. A huge portion of ceviche and fish tacos were simply incredible! We didn't find better ceviche in other, much more fancy places in Cancun!

 amazing find
Found this place just a few minutes walk from our Westin at km20, thanks to Tripadvisor! The bus loop (R2/R1) runs right past it every few minutes, so you can easily ride there. It is very basic, super relaxed, and the seafood (especially the ceviche) is amazing and inexpensive. Food is fresh and simple - fish tacos ("pescadillas") are nice but tiny...order 2-4 per person. One ceviche is enough for two. No mixed drinks, so no margeritas (!), but they have some spirits, I think. Corona is a better choice with this delicate seafood. You actually feel like you are in Mexico the time you are there, not just another tourist trap in Cancun. We went there four times for lunch and early dinners (apparently it is not possible to eat too much ceviche) and didn't see any other tourists there, just locals. Service was generally good, but relaxed, so order a few cervezas when you arrive! If you want a break from your posh hotel and like seafood, check this place out. Check the opening times - when we visited it was open from 12-7pm.

Don't let the appearance deceive you!
This a local hole in the wall eatery where you'll find lots of cab drivers, policia and hotel workers. You sit at plastic tables & chairs under a palapa on the lagoon. Charlie, the cook, cleans the fresh fish (right in front of you). On a huge grill, you can see large calderous with all kinds of seafood including octopus. They make this extremely hot sauce for the best fried pescadillas you'll ever have. Be sure you have an ice cold Pacifico beer before you take a bite. Have only been here for lunch.

At first glance you think " this would never fly in the US" but this is Mexico so we went in. Will go again before we leave. The cerviche alone us worth the trip. Fish tacos were great too. All for 20 bucks for two.

 Local gem
We ate here as a family of 3- including a 10 yr old.If you are after fine dining - don't go here. This is a local gem of a place- which serves seafood only. The place is hard to find and you enter going down som steps. The structure is a palapa with dirt floor and rustic tables made of wood. We had guacamole, fish tacos and shrimp ceviche. Our child had never had ceviche or fish tacos- needles to say they are now his favourite dish. The fish is caught by the staff and cooked in a basic kitchen. Wait staff were wonderful despite our limited Spanish.we left with full bellies at approx $20 US including drinks. We ate here 3 nights the food was so good- . A couple of nights there was a guitarist. Do yourself a favour- if you want to eat local fresh food, this is a must try. Open from 12 noon till 7 pm- after rain, spray yourself with insect repellant as mosquitos can be around.

Amazing authentic seafood overlooking the lagoon
On the lagoon side of the boulevard across from the citadel hotel I think is this fun little place. Amazing shrimp cocktail and ceviche! You have to go for the experience alone. Don't expect a flush toilet or fancy decor- but do expect some incredible food for lunch.

BEST local seafood tacos & cerviche!
El Galeon is THE BEST spot for cheap and delicious seafood tacos and cerviche. The cerviche is HUGE, large enough to share, and leftovers can be packed up and taken home!!! They have fish or octopus or mixed (fish & octopus) ceviche. The tacos are THE BEST as they lightly fry the tortilla, making the taco crispy. We HAD to go back another time!

Rustic and a real experience. Not for everyone. Read on.
I discovered this little spot on the lagoon (about kilometer marker 18.5)while jogging more than 20 years ago. It is clearly my favorite spot in Cancun. You can get Pescadillas (fried seafood tacos) all along the tourist zone, but the real thing is here. El fish fratanga is good but can't compare. Fried in a giant cast iron skilled over an open pit wood fire by the same lady who has been doing this for decades. Yes it is their 28th year.. Be forewarned, this is a primitive open air rustic restaurant. You flush the toilets by dipping a bucket into a rain barrel and pouring it into the toilet. If this is offputting, go before you leave your hotel. Drink the cold beer, eat the piping hot pescadillas, order some homemade guac. Don't try anything else as THIS is what they are all about. 20 years ago, chickens walked around and pecked at the sand floor...cats have replaced the chickens over the years. A real roof has replace the blue tarp. Go and enjoy. The polar opposite of Peter's Restaurant and every bit as good.

 Good Fish
Note that all they serve is fish and bananas (and drinks of course). My wife does not like fish so for those of you that are in the same boat the desert bananas are quite tasty. We ordered some fish tacos for the kids and the reviews on here are indeed correct. The tacos are cheap and tasty. I ordered the breaded shrimp. It was good and my kids liked it too. I ate their tacos after they did not care for them. My mother inlaw ordered a fried fish that she picked out and they fried. She enjoyed it very much and my daughter ate the fish eyes (I have know idea why she wanted to do this but she at them both and thought they were great). We are here a few more days and this place is across the street from our condo so I plan on swinging by for some taco's to go for lunches.

 Where the locals eat!
We had dinner at this restaurant. Dirt floors, and raw wood tables; it is not fancy but has great food. The mixed seafood cerviche is highly recommended! It is so tasty. We just loved the place, they have generators, it is down close to the lagoon. If you want good food and want to eat like the locals this is the place to go. And it is so inexpensive, we had tacos, cerviche and coronas for three for the cost of one meal at a fine dining restaurant the next night. i.e thing to know is they close early, between 7 and 7:30 probably due to the lighting...one day we walked by at 4:30 and the parking was so full they were partly on the sidewalk.

 Super cool local Mexican seafood
Cool cool chill local real Mexican food in a rustic lagoon side restaurant. Most ethnic local place I found on the water side of Cancun. The prices are cheap cheap by American standards. The ceviche is 135 pesos ($6-7) for a huge plate of fresh seafood. 3 fish tacos are half that price. The fish tacos are diced fish and then deep fried. Never had them that way before. Don't expect fancy. This is the opposite of fancy. Definitely the kind of place I seek out when in Mexico.

Amazing fried fish tacos for $1, plus cheap tequila and cold beer. All the fish is caught fresh that morning. If you want you can pick a whole fish to be cleaned, cut, and fried for you. Found this place by google mapping Royal Solaris and decided it was within walking distance to try it out. We got guacamole, a fish taco, fried fish, and the fried shrimp. The fish tacos were amazing and wish I had made a meal out of that! The guacamole was good and the Fried Fish was AMAZING!!!! very good food overall would definitely eat here again if I'm in the area. Nothing fancy it's outside under a straw hut it even rained while we were there. There are stray cats walking around and we got to watch them unload the fresh catch right in front of us.  Best place to eat in Cancun
This hidden little gem was recommended by our host at Solymar, it's across the street. We came here for lunch on our day in Cancun. We had the pescadillas that were amazing. My daughter and I ate a lot of those. I also had the camarones al mojo de ajo. Very garlicky and delicious. It was inexpensive and had a nice view of the bay. We spent 3 days in Cancun looking for pescadillas like we had here and were disappointed to not find them. Right before we left Cancun we ate here again. More pescadillas and the biggest ceviche I've ever had. So so good. My mouth is watering writing this review. If you want authentic Mexican food without the tourist vibe and prices go here!

Nothing fancy but worth a try! We opted for fish tacos followed by ceviche and a beer. Ceviche was cooked as apposed to marinated in citrus juice but nice all the same. For the price and setting you can't go wrong!

 Yum
At first glance you think " this would never fly in the US" but this is Mexico so we went in. Will go again before we leave. The cerviche alone us worth the trip. Fish tacos were great too. All for 20 bucks for two.

 Give it a chance!
I will admit, this place is a bit scary at first. There is no sign outside - only a creepy wooden staircase with a man sitting beside it beckoning you to go down. You walk in to find that it is an open-air (but covered) restaurant on the lagoon with lots of wooden tables and benches and some plastic chairs set up. The kitchen is basically a few tables set up in the corner and the food is cooked over an open fire. But the food is fresh and plentiful. The first time we went, my husband and I each had the fish tacos and we split the grilled plantain. It was excellent! I especially enjoyed the plantain covered in sweet cream! We went back a second time and split the shrimp ceviche. I was shocked at the mound of shrimp and pico de gallo that was set in front of us - it was huge! My husband ordered the breaded shrimp and I ended up getting the breaded fish. They were good, but I found myself wishing I had gotten the fish tacos again. All in all, while it’s not the cleanest and the service is not always the best, the food is wonderful!

Great authentic food at real old Mexico pricing! We arrived and found the local fishermen delivering a load of fish, octopus, and shrimp. I knew we were in the right place and could not wait to try the food. The kitchen is in the open barn like room and so is the fish cleaning station. You can watch your fresh seafood get cleaned and cooked right from your table.Everything we ordered was perfect, and the plantonos' with creama for desert were over the top!

 Authentic Mexican in Cancun
We loved this place. Very traditional Mexican that is still in Cancun. After a week we were wanting more traditional food and to venture outside of the hotels and this place was great. Order the fish tacos and cheap beers. Best for lunch as lots of mosquitos! But was a cool spot

a total hole in the wall, very rustic no walls, palapa roof, sand floor with plastic tables and chairs and basic open kitchen, but right on lagoon with great view and cheap eats.Very short menu of frien fish tacos, ceviche, fish and shrimp dishes only, beer and soda but not much else.Only open til about 7, more of a lunch place, very local and hidden , big sign and cars parked but restaurant cannot be seen from road, just climb down the stairs for a pleasant surprise!

Hole in the Wall - try it!
This lagoon side restaurant very close to the Westin Resort & Spa, Bel Air, and Royal Solaris (across street) properties was a fun place to each lunch. Many locals were eating here including hotel workers having their lunch. We watched fresh fish being delivered, then filleted, and cooked right up! There are no walls and just a dirt/sand floor but the food was fresh and delicious. Women were cooking on open flames in plain view since the kitchen is visible from the eating area. Our fish tacos were about .90 cents each! We also tried the fried plantains. Quite good!

 Where the locals go....
This place isn't for everyone but we talked with our hotel concierge and they all raved about this place. It's literally a hole in the trees but I could not have found a better place for lunch. The freshness of the seafood was wonderful. Picking out the size fish, watching it being cleaned, watching them devein and clean the shrimp and fry it all up...yummmmm. Everything had such great flavor!!! Thank you guys so much for what you do.

Nice food, not so nice restaurant
Nestled across the road from huge five star behemoth hotels, down some rickety stairs into a swap is a grubby place. And the smell is not enticing either. I suppose it's trying to be rustic, but just looks unclean and old. However, the food is spot on. Prawn and octopus ceviche was a large portion, as was fish cooked in lemon - delicate and flavoursome. Guacamole, ever present in Mexico was good. Fish tacos a let down. All in all, good value for food, but not ambiance. (I did like the sign warming of crocodiles in the lagoon behind!).

 Best ceviche ever, and more!!
We learned about this restaurant from a foodie from Cancun. It is a bit hard to find and it is across the street from the Solaris near the end of the Hotel Zone. You will see a small parking lot on the lagoon side, small sign, and a staircase to walk down. The ceviche is large and I believe the best that I have ever had (or pretty close to it). The menu is limited pretty much to fish tacos, different types of ceviche, and fish that you can see someone cleaning (that’s how fresh it is). This is rustic restaurant, on the beach, perhaps a shared table if the smaller tables are taken, but boy, is it good, and obviously authentic. The fish is served a few different ways, but the one that always I order is with garlic sauce. You can also see them cooking everything. This is a family run operation and the the family members all work very hard. I believe that they close at 7:00PM

 Terrific low key fish restaurant
We went here with our three teenage daughters. It is very rustic but quite charming. We had seven very tasty fish tacos (even one daughter who has never liked fish tacos raved about them), one ridiculously large, fresh, and delicious mixed ceviche (shrimp and octopus), and one rather unremarkable shrimp with garlic. This plus four bottles of water and one beer for $32. We would go back for lunch again. Best fish tacos in Cancun we have tried.

 Where the locals go!
This is a great find just across the street from our Condo, down some steps and right on the Lagoon. The floor is hard sand, the tables & chairs are odds and ends and the fishing boats are pulled right on the sand in front. All the fish and shrimp are fresh caught, cleaned in front of you and cooked on a wood fire, no electricity though there may be lights. It fills right up with the local hotel workers and tourists if they happen upon it. The fish tacos are out of this world!
